Word Social Forum 2007, Nairobi

Nel 2007 l'associazione Zone onlus ha organizzato, nell'ambito del World Social Forum; un convegno dal titolo: “La città come bene comune. Quale futuro per i quartieri informali?”. L’evento si è svolto in due sessioni: la prima un dibattito al Toi market, nello slum di Kibera, la seconda al Forum. L’evento era co-organizzato dal Toi Saving Scheme, un membro del Muungano wa Wanavijiji (Slum Dwellers Federation of Kenya), con Mwamko wa Vijana (Slum Youth Federation) Pamoja Trust, una ONG keniota formatasi nel 1999 per mobilitare e sostenere i movimenti dei poveri urbani.

Nel mondo la maggioranza della popolazione vive in aree urbane. Nel Sud del mondo, la stragrande maggioranze della popolazione urbana vive negli “slums”: quartieri informali, baraccopoli, favelas, ammassi di abitazioni precarie prive di infrastrutture e servizi collettivi. Stiamo diventati “Il pianeta degli slums” (Mike Davis).
